Xbox 20th Anniversary
Description
For the 20th Anniversary of Xbox, we wanted to lean in on the nostalgia of Xbox past. I was tasked with taking over the Xbox homepage with a theme reminiscent of the original 2001 Xbox console. This included creating a template for the Xbox.com design team to use so we could keep the promotions on the home page up to date with new content while staying within the theme for the duration of its live time. Additionally I created a ‘family portrait’ wallpaper with characters from top Xbox titles through the years available to download from the Xbox wallpapers site.
Process
As a big Xbox fan and long time player, I was very familiar with the original Xbox console. I wanted to lean into the design elements from the original futuristic sci-fi like menu UI by pulling in the neon green glow and interlace digital textures, as well as changing the shapes of our usual home page promotions. For our site navigation, I also wanted to pull it into the world of the original Xbox by creating some skeuomorphic shapes that matched the console and controller itself, and an easter egg that played the startup animation when clicked. This is a part of the site that isn’t normally customized so this took a lot of collaboration with the developer to create a design that worked responsively from desktop down to mobile phones, while also keeping localization in mind for longer translations.
